Questions & Answers:
Are there prizes?

Are there prizes?
Answer:
For each contest and for the Caribou Cup, students can download and print their Certificates of Participation or Achievement in their preferred language. The K/1 level is unranked, so there are no prizes, however K/1 students can print certificates of participation.
There are also cash prizes awarded to top-performing students at the end of the school year. For more information, visit the Prizes page.
Why did the Prize system change?

Why did the Prize system change?
Answer:
The Caribou Cup Prize system underwent changes during the 2019-2020 Caribou Cup for several reasons:
- This was the first year where time was not used as a tie-breaker, resulting in many students with the same rank. While the new algorithm uses the same calculation as before (for each rank a set amount × student’s percentage score), it is now equipped to deal with situations where it reaches a rank where the money left for that rank is not enough to distribute fairly. In these cases, it splits what money is left over, or if there are too many students in that rank it will randomly select students from that rank.
- This was the first year where a free Grade 2 level was offered. As this level is free and not meant to be overly hard, it made more sense to start a graduated system where the prize pool increases with contest difficulty.
- Many times, schools would not claim their prizes or prefer to give the amount to winning students, so we did away with School Prizes and added the money to the student Prize pool.
For more detailed information on how the Prize pool is distributed for each grade, please visit the Prizes page.

Why not use time as a tie-breaker for the lower grades so that a high-ranking student gets a better prize?

Why not use time as a tie-breaker for the lower grades so that a high-ranking student gets a better prize?
Answer:
For the lower grades, our aim is mainly to encourage students to appreciate and have fun with math. The questions are intended to be accessible to most learners at those ages. Using time as a tie-breaker would only lead to students guessing instead of thinking through the answers.
For strong students up for a challenge, it is possible to participate at a grade level higher than one’s own.
